Logjam House: Spa Deck Design

CLIENT NAME: Colorado State University

PROJECT DATE: Fall 2025

Project Brief

This project provided the unique opportunity to design a specialized spa deck for the Logjam House, a residence defined by its rugged, natural surroundings. Faced with a steep, jagged site, the challenge was to create an outdoor extension that felt like a seamless architectural transition rather than an afterthought. Our “Natural Integration” concept focused on smoothing the rigid lines of the existing structure through organic curves and intentional spatial bubbles, specifically targeting a user experience that prioritizes both social engagement and tranquil retreat. The design process involved a rigorous iteration of the deck’s footprint, expanding the square footage to create a secondary access point from the kitchen and improve circular flow. To meet the requirements for year-round functionality, the design features an integrated hot tub with tiered step access and a custom fire feature separated by frosted glass for wind protection. Materiality was key to the site’s story, utilizing natural wood decking and built-in planters that bleed into the surrounding landscape. By balancing the house’s heavy timber DNA with modern elements like outdoor string lighting and sleek glass partitions, the final design serves as a functional “landing zone” that captures the visceral beauty of the site throughout the day.
